The way we learn

Just a quick note for today about The way many of us has been changed by the pandemic: learning by hearing

Can I say it that way? YES

So today I got a feedback that it is difficult to read training instructions slide by slide and listen to the voice-over. It’s actually more intuitive to play a video and speed the pace up to even 1.5x.

LEARNING BY LISTENING

This practice is quite synced with how I learn and get information too, indeed. Since the pandemic, I started listening to podcast more often. I do that in early morning, as a way to kickstart my day. I do that when I have lunch, as a refreshing break after the first morning shift. Sometimes I just listen to podcast when I prepare food.

Most of the time, when I listen to a podcast, I must say my attention is 90% because I want to do that. Only when cooking, the attention span goes down to 70%. It’s obviously because I also practice mindfulness and I want to take the best out of each information I listen in. I take note, highlight what I like, I even recap what interest me most.

THE EASE OF VOICE-OVER INFORMATION

But for many others, paying 50% attention to your podcast and spending the remaining to other things is the norm, I guess. So we don’t feel like we waste time. Or on the flipped side, we feel like we gain some more time and more knowledge while doing something else.

I can easily see people drive and listen to podcast (or radio). Cook and listen to podcast (like me). Or even doing admin work on laptop and listen to podcast as well. Anything that don’t require your 100% attention. And this, I believe, in a way, has shaped our new way of absorbing things.

Funny enough, text-to-speech analytics was introduced today in substack. It means from now on, writers can use this technology to convert their writing into voice. The other way of consuming information – listening.

VOICE IS DEFINITELY THE WAY TO GO FOR INFORMATION CONSUMPTION

Substack already found out a huge number of writers trying to voice over their writing, add intro music or even use some other tunes to spice up their articles. This point makes it to my conclusion – the use of voice in consuming information has been tremendously adopted. It’s entertaining, lively and more engaged with the content creator.

BRING TECH TO THE NON-TECH for LEARNING

Last but not least, on a note of technology, today I found a way to help my aunt who cannot understand English gets access to auto-translated youtube video. Thanks to technology again, information is widely spread and made it easier for mass population.

Bravo technology, right? The way we learn, the way we teach, hence, is changing, smoothly.
